FERNANDA SNOWDON & RAMONA ROCHA
LUZ OSCURA
4 APRIL – 29 MAY 2025
Fernanda Snowdon (Fernanda Reyes Reyes b. 1998 in Ocoyoacac, State of Mexico) is a Mexican painter and graphic designer whose work delves deeply into melancholy, memory, and absence. Born in Ocoyoacac, State of Mexico, in 1998, Fernanda holds a degree in Graphic Design from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México. However, her training as a painter has been entirely self-taught. For more than four years, she has dedicated herself professionally to painting, developing a realistic figurative body of work using oil painting as her primary technique. Through this medium, she reinterprets emotions and memories by capturing the melancholic states of being, such as anguish, hope, emptiness, and memory—states that manifest primarily in facial expressions.
Each of her pieces becomes a window into a specific emotional state, a reflection of moments and people who have been part of her life. Her work addresses profound themes such as childhood depression, suicide, and memories from her early years, with the symbolic presence of sheep—animals that accompanied her during her upbringing. Currently, Fernanda is exploring the representation of ghosts, symbols of absences that, far from being voids, embody the lack of moments and loved ones who are no longer present. These ghosts represent how she visualizes absence—not as an end, nor as something left behind by physical death, but as the imprint that remains when something or someone is gone. This series is deeply connected to her personal experiences, as each figure and space becomes an echo of what once was.
For Fernanda, each piece is a continuous process of self-discovery, a search for reconciliation with the past, and a way to understand absence not as an ending but as an essential part of memory and identity.
Throughout her career, Fernanda has had the opportunity to exhibit her work in various spaces, both nationally and internationally. Although she has participated in multiple group exhibitions, some of the most notable include her participation in the BADA International Art Fair 2023 in Mexico City, receiving an Honorable Mention in the Lumen Open Painting Contest 2022 held at the Palacio Postal in the same city, and competing in the Rodin National Painting Contest 2024 in the professional category at the Antigua Academia de San Carlos, further solidifying her presence in the art world.
Fernanda's work has been acquired by Mexican collectors and the company Lumen, allowing her art to gain greater recognition. Through her work, she invites the viewer to reflect on human fragility and how absence can leave a deep and indelible mark on our lives.
