BOSCO SODI
ROCK AND ROLL – BOSCO SODI AND OBJECTS OF INTERESTS

MUSEU CASA DAS ROSAS, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL
20 MARCH – 19 MAY 2024

Bosco Sodi employs natural components and raw materials to examine major themes of colonial cultures and their effects. He is well-known for his work that moves between the abstract and the tangible, with textures that challenge the materials with which they are constructed. The works on display here, which are entirely made in Brazil, interact with the architectural design of Casa das Rosas in São Paulo.

Sodi delves into themes such as exploration, colonization, and environmental impact, promoting a journey of discovery and reflection. He mixes history and materiality, emulating concrete poetry, where form and content are inseparable and expression arises directly from the material used. His methodology, which involves the use of local materials and integration with the context of each place, reflects the authenticity and energy of what he produces under the liberating and colonizing duality of rock and roll, capturing the spirit of the times with presence and objectivity that defy convention.

Sodi names his works with excerpts from rock songs, and each work shown in this exhibition was titled with excerpts from a single song. Few realize it, but countless times rock has been used as a weapon of cultural colonization and a weapon of political deterrence.

The exhibition at Casa das Rosas is an experience through memory and matter, an exploration of the geopoetics of the Americas. From the ritual materials Sodi investigates, ranging from earth, coffee, and sugar to wood, gold, blood, and salt. The artist proposes to the visitor a search for evidence embedded in our collective memory of how minds are being colonized and challenges us to see beyond the surface, to feel the complex texture of history, and to recognize the power of art as a tool to question, connect, and heal.

Bosco Sodi (b. 1970 in Mexico City, Mexico) lives and works in New York City, USA, and Oaxaca, Mexico.

He is known for his richly textured, vividly colored large-scale paintings. Sodi has discovered an emotive power within the essential crudeness of the materials that he uses to execute his paintings. Focusing on material exploration, creative gesture, and the spiritual connection between the artist and his work, Sodi seeks to transcend conceptual barriers. “Explanations about my work represent the biggest obstacle to its experience: words become hollow and obsolete. The intention of my work is to be observed and experienced.”, Bosco ...
